Dispatches From The Cactus Patch Feb. 28th, 2024

One of the by-products of becoming a senior citizen is the onset of boredom. I can only watch so much Wheel of Fortune, although Momo would sit for days watching a pre-recorded loop of the same episodes and keep guessing all the puzzles, waiting for old Pat to send her a check or a vacation voucher to Ukraine. I want to slit a vein.

The Beatnik thing didn’t work out; I was too old, forgot all the best verbiage, and couldn’t stand to wear turtleneck sweaters anymore. Revisiting “On The Road” stirred an interest, but then I took a nap and forgot about it. When I have a good idea, it’s best to avoid daytime naps; they tend to act as a mental reset button for us folks.

Momo suggests I try my hand as a social influencer on TikTok or YouTube. She might be onto something. I have an abundance of white hair, much like those TV preachers from the 1980s when a person could lay their hands on top of their Motorola console color unit and be healed, but only after you gave the call-in number person your credit card number: no donation, no cure. I have the schtick and the suaveness to pull it off. I imagine it would be more like a Brother Dave Gardner comedy album. Speaking of, Brother Dave was my idol back in the late 50s and early 60s. But then, the portable record player broke. My comedy stint was over before it started. But I have the hair: you be the judge and let me know; my phone number is BR-549. A coinsedense how much I resemble Brother Dave.

  1. Well, I think your wife is right — you have many gifts that could make you rich beyond your wildest dreams. Of course, what you’d do with that kind of money at your age is another issue.

You’re right about “naps” being a daily reset button. I see no downside to it … and if it weren’t for naps, I’d be in bed around 9 p.m. We don’t watch much television anymore, but we watch various series on DVD or Netflix/Prime. Sometimes, we binge-watch, not getting to bed before 11:00 p.m.

Yep, we are the wild ones.

    1. Oh man, I haven’t seen 11 PM in many moons; well, hardly seen any moons since I go to bed early, or fall asleep in my Barco-lounger. I’m working on an idea for my first comeback, sort of like Elvis in 1968.

  2. I miss Maynard G. Perhaps [no doubt] my memory is, em, ah, clouded, yeah, that’s it, “clouded,” but that was Bob Denver’s best role. Bob Denver? Or was that John Denver?

Oh. Gotta run. Here comes Ward with my morning pills. Hate it when he comes before breakfast because someone [I think the liberal twink two doors down the hall] complains I’m “on the step again,” calling spades spades and other unforgiveables. Calm-down meds before breakfast coffee allus make me fall asleep, ending up with may face plonked into the milk in my Cocoa Puffs bowl.

  3. My mother loved Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. Every night. Haven’t seen them since she died. I do watch sitcom re-runs and a few movies. HGTV, Food channel, but mostly sports. I’m a Lions/Redwings/Tiger fan and without sports, I’d be tempted to disconnect the whole thing. But they get sports people up the wazoo. So might as well watch a few other things.

    1. You’re welcome. I had a decent collection some years ago, but alas, they were pilfered during a move. I still have one of Brother Dave’s live albums from 1960. Other great ones were, Red Fox, Rusty Warren, Alan Sherman, Von Meader and of course Lenny Bruce.

      1. I seem to recall some Jonathan Winters LPs, too. She was a musician, so she also had Homer and Jethro with their parodies of popular songs of the time, like “Somewhere over the rainbow-hoh, skies are blue, there’s a land that I heared of…”

  4. You and Momo should go on the road as a musical comedy act. After all, senior citizens are among the select few brave enough to be funny now. Plus, old songs that have been played three million times are still popular. 🙂
