Armageddon Is Upon Us…The Last Days of Texas

I am not a snow person, nor an ice one. Cold weather is fine for a while, but then I want to be bathed in the warmth of the sun (Brian Wilson). But then, in Texas, the sun’s warmth means cooking alive in 100-plus-degree heat. So, living in Texas is for tough folks. Alas, the winter snow and ice Armageddon is about to return in two days; the last one was in 2021 and crippled the state for a week.

Momo and I stopped by our HEB for a few items this afternoon, and that was a mistake. The place was like a zombie apocalypse: folks fighting and snarling over the last loaf of bread, fists flying in the aisles over Hamburger Helper, and riots at the frozen pizza case. It was all entertaining, watching my fellow Texans act like, well, crazed Texans. We don’t do well when bad winter weather is approaching, and even worse once it arrives. My truck has All Wheel Drive, so I’m good with the snow, but not the ice storms, then we stay in and watch 1883 or 1923 again.

Momo is already fretting about missing church on Sunday because of the storm. I told her that God will understand, after all, he’s the one who created this lousy weather and is sending it our way. I stocked up on extra bird seed and peanuts for the Crows, Blue Jays, and now the pesky Squirrel has returned and found the relocated bird feeders, so it’s back to war with the little nut-breath. The Racoons, Possum, and Skunk are still visiting nightly, enjoying their cafeteria of dog food and sliced apples. My backyard is the equivalent of Luby’s for critters. Now, a Coyote has been coming around, but I have roadrunners on the property, so we’ll see how that plays out.

I’ll post some pictures of the end of Texas as we know it, if and when it happens…if we survive.

  1. Meanwhile, here in Southern Nevada, we’re anticipating sunny skies this weekend with a very frigid daytime high in the upper 50’s. Of course, come summer, we will pray that we somehow avoid spontaneous human combustion and will gladly settle for merely being burned to a crisp.

    1. I spent a year in Las Vegas building some car dealerships, so I know the summers and how brutal they are. I mostly got a light frying during most days, only had my shoes melt to the concrete slab once. Your a tough bird to live there.

  2. We’re to be having some cooler temps here in the south too, Phil – but I don’t believe it’s going to be a snow/icemageddon. No matter how cool it gets down here, I dare not complain to the folks back home in Sask, Canada – who will be experiencing high winds and temps in the -30 to -40° C (-22 to -40 ° F) range for about the 10th time this winter. The thing about that is that nobody charges the grocery stores before the deep freeze happens. It’s just a way of life. Our summers can get as hot as the RGV, so I’m going to lay claim to being a wee bit heartier than you. 😉 At any rate, you and Momo stay warm and safe … and stay indoors if you can.

    1. Momo and I have lived in the north, so we are more used to it than most folks here. We plan to stay in and enjoy watching Landman again. My son lives on North Padre and is not taking chances and is covering all of his topicals. The worst you would get is the upper 30s. I lived in MN for a while and went through one of their winters as well as Cincinnati OH, and there’s are also bad. Us Texans don’t know how to handle them.

  3. My daughter and I stopped at H-E-B last night after Bible study and shelves were cleared! I took photos and sent them to New York where they have a foot of snow and single-digit temperatures right now.
I have heard the ice can be bad here and knock out the power for a while. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen.

    1. It’s all true, we have ice storms that are legendary, and I hope it doesn’t happen, but the weather is calling for 1/2 to 1 inch of ice in our area, and that will bring down power lines, trees, and most people. Stay safe.

    1. We are looking forward to being stranded in our house. The entire town is in panic mode, like it was in Covid. It will change before Friday evening, it always does. The weather girl is always wrong these days. I’ll pass the hidy to Momo.

  5. Stay warm, if you can. We live in an old neighborhood and lose electric power a lot anyway, so we’re as ready as we can be. Old bathroom heaters still work and can keep the house sorta warm if that happens.
