They Don’t Make Them Like They Used To


Pictured above for your drooling pleasure ( if you are a musician ) is my “go-too” guitar, a 1980 Epiphone Casino with original P90 pickups, which I combine with a Fender Blues 1×12 tweed 100-watt amp. Years ago, when our band was going through our British invasion phase, we all tried Vox amps, but we couldn’t master the accent required to use them correctly. This is the same guitar the Beatles used for so many years because of its versatility and sound. It’s the Epiphone cousin to the Gibson 335, but much lighter and with a smoother playing neck. I played this baby for over 20 years in a few hundred gigs, and it never once let me down. My grandson has the blonde model of the same guitar, only a newer edition. And yes, Yoko did break up the band.

  2. I love these guitars…I have a couple of Epiphones but not the Casino. My family made guitars for country music stars in the 60s and 70s with Grammer and Gower acoustic guitars and some electric. My goto is one similar to this…sunburst green but with humbucker pickups…. I thought about replacing them with P90s…

    1. Mine was old when I purchased it at the Dallas Guitar show in 2001. I believe it was made in 78 from what the serial number indicates. My wife gifted me a Taylor 315 C in 2007 for Christmas, so that’s been my go-to acoustic electric since then. Tried different amps but now settle on a Fender 1×12 tweed Blues Jr. and a Fender acoustic amp. My 27 year old grandson is self taught and plays like Ted Nugent with a bit of Clapton thrown in. Granddaughter is 16 and plays classical on a Yamaha spanish guitar. So far my youngest grandson 10, is playing a tuba and learning the violin. It’s good for a kid to learn an instrument and to read music, even if they never play professionally.
