This is the song that our band recorded at Summit Sounds in Dallas, Texas, in 1968. Produced by Marvin (Smokey) Montgomery and Artie Glen. Both Marvin and Artie were Light Crust Doughboys and record producers. Marvin produced the song ” Hey Paula,” and many of Delbert McClinton’s, and Bruce Channels records. Delbert played harmonica on “Hey Baby”. Artie Glen wrote the famous hit for Elvis, “Crying In The Chapel.” Bob Sullivan was the sound engineer on our record, and he also worked as the sound engineer for the Rolling Stones and a few other famous rock groups that chose to record in Dallas. The original recording featured guitars and organ, but Marvin wrote horn parts and added them later, giving it that Chicago and Tijuana Brass sound, which was just emerging around that time.

We did the original in one day, after the horns were added by studio musicians we came back and polished it up to make it more AM radio friendly. To get the old circus calliope sound, I detuned my guitar a bit. The originl cut was pretty heavy guitar and organ driven.

Thanks, it was recorded in 1968, so it’s a bit dated. Our bass player pm that record, and my lifelong friend, has his 80th coming up at the end of the month and we will be playing some Eagles, Dylan, Glen Campell and Old Crow Medicine Show tunes with the help of his brother-in-law, a picker from down Austin way.
