The Texas International Pop Festival, Lewisville, Texas, August 1969

The ATNT Playing The Festival

Remove the "made with AI" watermark/sign from this image. Keep absolutely everything else identical — the band on stage, all musicians, Marshall Sartin at the red Farfisa organ facing the crowd, the drummer exactly as he is, the other band members, the crowd, the lighting, the Woodstock-era warm film photography aesthetic. Only remove the AI watermark text, nothing else.

Marshall Sartin ( deceased)—organ &vocals, Barry Corbett(deceased)—drums, vocals, and arrangements ( Lil Spector), Danny Goode — bass & Vocals, Jarry Davis—rhythm guitar & vocals, Phil Strawn—lead guitar &vocals. Backstage photo by Ansel Adams, who had been drinking Southern Comfort with Janis Joplin and the band Chicago.

  1. I can’t imagine playing to that many people at once, Phil. My top was a few thousand…what you did was insane! THAT was a huge festival! Of course it is Texas so it fits. Janis…that would have been cool meeting her if only for a few minutes like you did. Zeppelin was there as well right?

    • Yeah, I met Janis, a nice girl, but she needed a shower. Everyone did; it was so hot and dusty. Zeppelin said they would never return to this hellhole called Texas because they went on after dark, and it was still 100 degrees. The next month, they were back playing Memorial Auditorium in Dallas. Daltry made a fool of himself.

      • Yea…Zeppelin followed the money no matter how hot it was lol. Yea I would think that day…everyone would be rank…that is hot. That is a great picture by the way Phil…just awesome.

    • Nancy, we were scheduled to play but the promoters screwed up everything, including not having CCR there. The picture is us a few weeks before the festival, I just inserted us in. We had a bru-ha with Angus Wynnn Jr. about the no slot clause, but we were a popular Texas band, so he didn’t care. I enjoyed myself immensely, met Janis and some others and got to play and hang out with all the players. Once in a lifetime experience. Led Zeppelin were the rudest of the bunch. Janis was really the politest person I met there, right there with my future wire, Momo, who was also there all three days.

      • It’s a shame Janis died so young. Sometimes successful people get too full of themselves. It’s nice to know Janis didn’t. What a fabulous and memorable Texas event to have shared with Momo. 🤠🎸💒
